Yak wool stories — Chapter II — Luxury that cares

A herder and his yaks in Mongolian steppe

The pretext

Sustainability is not a trend at Nomé; it is a necessity. It is inherent to the yak. As gentle grazers, they coexist harmoniously with the land. This makes yak fiber not just a superior choice for the wearer, but the most responsible choice for the planet.

The Gentle Inhabitant

The global demand for cashmere has put a heavy burden on the land, as goats graze by pulling grass out by the roots. In contrast, yaks have short tongues and graze gently, clipping only the tops of the grass and leaving the roots intact. They also graze on a wider variety of plants than cashmere goats, maintaining the biodiversity of the Steppe.

Choosing yak is a conscious choice to preserve the nomadic heritage and the fragile ecosystem of the Mongolian plains. It is a tribute to a way of life rooted in harmony with nature.

The Integrity of Color

True luxury is found in what is left untouched. Because dyeing is the most resource-intensive stage of textile production, Nomé celebrates the yak’s natural palette. By choosing to work with the fiber’s natural tones—over-dyeing only our deepest Black—we avoid excessive water and energy consumption while preserving the wool’s "bloom" and organic strength.

Yak down has a naturally dark, pigmented base that resists bright dyes. To achieve vibrant colors, the wool would require aggressive bleaching, a process that strips the fiber of its structural integrity and signature softness. Furthermore, yak fiber is sensitive to the high heat required for dyeing, risking damage to its delicate scales.

By choosing Nomé, you are embracing a palette defined by nature and a garment that respects the earth it came from.
