Yak wool stories — Chapter I — Luxury that performs

Yaks in mongolian steppe

The pretext

For decades, the language of luxury, softness, and warmth has been simplified into a single word: Cashmere. At Nomé, we believe true luxury requires a deeper vocabulary—one that is more resilient, rarer, and more rooted in nature.

Our journey led us to the Mongolian Steppe—not in search of a cashmere alternative, but in discovery of a fiber that stands in a category of its own. We don’t view yak wool as a substitute; we view it as an evolution. We have curated this three-chapter series to share the science and the soul of the fiber that defines Nomé.

The Engineering of Survival

The yak survives temperatures as low as -40°C through a remarkable feat of natural engineering. It has evolved a specialized undercoat—the khullu—which is up to 30% warmer than sheep’s wool and up to 40% warmer than Merino.

This performance is rooted in the fiber's unique architecture. Because yak fibers are naturally hollow, they act as thermal air chambers that trap heat while allowing moisture to escape. It is a wool that breathes with you; in fact, independent tests show yak wool is 1.6 times more breathable than cashmere.

Even when damp, the wool preserves its warmth. A natural coating of myristic acid—a hydrophobic fatty acid—works as a microscopic shield to repel moisture, while the hollow-core structure continues to insulate. This dual-layered defense system ensures dry, consistent comfort in any climate.

The Performance in Practice

One of the most practical applications of superior breathability is seen in drying times. Because yak wool naturally repels water and breathes so efficiently, a piece like our Erdene Sweater takes roughly half the time to dry compared to a similar garment made from Merino wool.

Beyond warmth and breathability, yak down offers a "technical" luxury: it is naturally static-resistant, ensuring a perfect drape that never sticks to the body. Its inherent anti-bacterial properties mean your Nomé pieces stay fresh longer, requiring less frequent care and leaving a smaller environmental footprint.

If luxury is a delicate moment, choose cashmere. But if luxury is a lifetime of warmth, a commitment to the planet, and a story worth telling—choose Nomé.
